At the Forgotten House we had an outside waterspout installed to provide access to clean drinking water for all of the Karen families living in the area. The families also use this water for a number of other things such as bathing, cooking and washing clothes.
There is always a constant flow of people coming to the house to refill their water jugs. Before they had access to this water the families would drink directly from the streams and nearby river. Because of the problem with open defecation and trash burning in the area we at Forgotten viewed this as a great health concern and talked with the families about their views on the matter as well. All of the families agreed that this was a very serious health concern and said that they would greatly appreciate access to clean water. We therefore had the outside waterspout installed to help protect the families and their children from this risk.
Forgotten is also currently looking into having proper toilets installed to limit the amount of open defecation, which in turn will better protect the Karen families from the associated health concerns.
